I wanted to make you aware of a wonderful resource I found while browsing on The church has a site dedicated to Self-Reliance. I encourage you to take a few minutes to visit there and especially encourage you to watch the video clip by Robert D. Hales. I felt the spirt as his words of truth reminded me that the Lord cares about our spiritual and temporal needs.

Around Town

From time to time we learn of activities or events that you may be interested in knowing about.  While they aren't neccessarily things that we would endorse in a Relief Society meeting it's still good to share things that might be of interest to one another.

That said, there are two things I'll share today that might catch your eye:

Let's Go to the Movies:
Sister Angel wanted to recommend a good movie which is currently playing at the Oviedo Marketplace and recommends you see it before it's gone. Following is her email:

The Oviedo Regal Cinema has a movie playing called Letters to God. It is a very good movie with a great message. St. Lukes sent an email out to everyone last week encouraging them to come out and support the movie because the Oviedo cinema talked of discontinuing its showing if they didn’t bring in certain numbers last weekend. They ended up leaving it due to so much support and filling the theatres. So, it’s playing again this weekend and they’ve asked us to spread the word about the movie so that we can keep it out there.
Please try to take the time to go see this wonderful Christian movie THIS WEEKEND! Although it opened in the Top 10 last weekend, the overall box office receipts were not as anticipated, especially considering the high quality of the movie and the incredibly positive reviews it has received from moviegoers. We need to send a message to Hollywood that good Christian movies are sustainable or they will stop making them! You can view the movie trailer at The movie is rated PG.

Calling all Book Lovers:

For those who are new to the area you may not know that the Scholastic Book Company has a warehouse in Lake Mary.  Several times a year they open it to the public and sell directly from the shelves at 50% off or more. (For those with school-aged kids it's the same items you see in the book flyers that come home.)

The next sale is: May 13 - 22.  Check the website for times and to sign up and get discout coupons for your purchases (on top of the discounts).  Enter code: DIRECT and you can register online before you go for a FAST-CART PASS.

The warehouse moved locations and is now at: 38 Skyline Drive, Suite 1020, Lake Mary, FL 32746 (It's easy to find. Drive the back way to the old stake center in Lake Mary and then pass the stake center on the right and turn right at the light onto Lake Emma Dr. Then look for signs on the left. Mapquest it to be sure though.)

For those of you who would like copies of all of the handouts we receive each month from Joanna's home storage class. You can download them here. They are great handouts to have in a binder so that you can refer to them often. She has put together recipes, general info, great tips and a few spiritual quotes to remind us of the importance of provident living in our lives.

I know what your thinking........ but, they are actually yummy. We tried them at our Provident Living meeting last month and I was surprised at how good they are. Try them! It's a great way to start using your food storage and experimenting with things you may not normally use.

Welcome to the Oviedo Relief Society Blog

My dear friends and sisters,

I started a blog for RS at the beginning of the year and included just a few of you as a test.  But today I decided it would be fun to let everyone know about it. I hope it will develop into a place where you can come to get the latest information on activities in Relief Society, updates to our lesson schedules, recipe exchanges, ideas for provident living, visiting teaching and MORE.

Since I am relativly new to blogging, I am also eager for your suggestions for improvement and welcome your contributions.

Warmest Regards,

Meredith Shepherd

Self-Reliance Resources

Dear Sisters,

Here are some online links that you may be interested in as an extension to our classes in Relief Society, taught on Thurs. Jan. 7th.

I hope they will inspire you to become more Self Reliant and offer you help in teaching financial responsibility to your children.

Self-Reliance Resources is a new topic page at the website. Here you will find study resources, articles by our General Authorites, Online Materials and Scriptures relating to self reliance.
An official website of the church which offers resources on welfare & self reliance. Ideas for Humanitarian Service, Emergency Preparedness, Employment, Food Storage, Gardening, Education, Family Finances, Social & Emotional Strength, & Physical Health are a few of the topics available to explore.
The purpose of this Web site on Personal Finance is to instruct members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and others around the world about personal financial management. This free instruction is provided through a series of lessons delivered over the Internet. There are also family home evening lessons in the resource section which you can use to help you teach your children about the value of hard work and setting goals.
